Staying Motivated to Exercise – Do What you Love

Choosing the Right Exercise for You

~ Mike Hanik, MEd and Youth Fitness Expert

The type of exercise you choose all depends on what you love to do. If your physical activity meets the time and intensity requirements you will get health benefits. One of the most important factors in developing a fitness program is to find activities you enjoy. When you are planning your program take the time to think about and write down the activities you enjoy. There is no point in investing in a gym membership if you do not enjoy that activities or programs available at the gym. You will not go on a regular basis and be wasting money. Do not purchase home equipment if you know you do not like it and will not use it regularly.

“Walking is a great starting activity for the person who is beginning an exercise program or has taken time off from exercising” says Dr. Bruce Hanik from Texas A&M University. Almost everyone can walk. It does not require a financial investment. It is not difficult to find safe places to walk. Finding a walking partner also helps time pass more quickly and creates a sense of accountability. A person just starting out can walk for 10 minutes each day. Dr. Hanik also suggests incorporating some type of resistance training into your exercise regimen. Building strength is important to improving fitness. Many body weight exercises can be incorporated into a walking program.

If walking is not your thing, then find another activity you enjoy. It could be cycling, swimming, playing golf, playing a racquet sport, dancing, or shooting baskets. Remember to start slowly if you have not worked out in a long time. If you push too hard at the stat you may have to take time off to overcome soreness or an injury.

The bottom line when designing a personal or family fitness program is to find activities you enjoy. Family Time Fitness has many programs available that will help you get started with exercise ideas for you and your children. They do not require a big financial commitment or contract. The programs can guide you and provide you with the information and resources you need to get started or to add variety to your routines.
